Studying with sculptor Nick Vidnovic, figure sculpture brought the lessons learned in drawing to three dimensions. Again, quick sketches captured gesture, while longer studies brought me to an understanding of structure and balance.
Working with clay provided my first experience of direct translation of visual and spatial input to volumetric and textural understanding. My method of working was to press and draw the clay along the lines of musculature, the frame of the structure - neither additive nor subtractive, I instead refigured the medium to reflect the body. The fingers took the place of pencil in tracing the potential for movement and gesture embodied in each figure.
