Figure Drawing
Studying with sculptor Robert Engman, figure drawing was a revelation to me. Quick sketches captured gesture and volume, while longer studies drew me into an understanding of structure, surface, and presence.
I learned how to observe during this time, and how to focus on both the details and the whole of an object of observation. The marks made on the paper traced the volumes and curves of the bodies, situating them in space, giving them dimension, and expressing embodied potential.
